Larvae/care
Roughly 250 Adult Large Larvae.
Black soldier fly larvae are a high fat -high calcium worm loved by many animals. They are raised on a diet of probiotic-treated, upcycled food scraps, and contain much more calcium than mealworms. Their balanced Calcium:Phosphorus ratio makes them the ideal feeder for chickens and reptiles.
To store, keep them in their lidded cup at room temperature. If you plan to keep your larvae longer than 5 days, moving the container to a cooler spot (50-60 degrees) will help extend their life span. Larvae go dormant in a wine fridge around 60*F. We start to see die off below 50*
freeze for long term storage. Store up to 3 months frozen. Chickens love them anyway and don't seem to mind!
Note: Larvae darken in color as they mature and turn brown/black a few days before they pupate, this is normal and does not affect quality of treat.
If allowed to pupate, hatched Black Soldier Flies are harmless- the flies do not eat, and cannot fly or see well. BS flies only live for a few days and then die, they are tropical and are non-invasive.
